What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 peptide best known for weight management and appetite control. It mimics a hormone naturally released after eating, helping the brain register fullness and reducing hunger and food cravings. The practical result is that people tend to eat less without relying on willpower alone.

Why Semaglutide?

Proven Weight Loss

Large human trials have demonstrated substantial weight loss, with participants in a major 68-week study losing an average of 14.9% of their starting weight.

Appetite Control

Semaglutide reduces hunger and increases feelings of fullness, helping people naturally consume fewer calories and making weight management easier to maintain.

Metabolic Benefits

Clinical trials found improvements beyond the scales, including reductions in waist circumference, blood pressure and several markers linked with metabolic health.

Who is Semaglutide Popular With?

Semaglutide is primarily popular with people focused on weight loss who find hunger, cravings or portion control make maintaining a calorie deficit difficult. Its combination of strong human evidence and direct effects on appetite makes it one of the best-known options among people comparing GLP-1-based approaches to weight management.

Research & Evidence

Semaglutide has extensive human clinical research behind it. Large randomised trials have demonstrated substantial weight loss, reduced waist circumference and improvements in several metabolic health measures, with longer-term research showing that much of the weight loss can be maintained while treatment continues.

STEP 1 — 14.9% Average Weight Loss

The landmark STEP 1 trial followed 1,961 adults with overweight or obesity for 68 weeks. Participants receiving semaglutide alongside lifestyle intervention lost an average of 14.9% of their starting body weight, compared with 2.4% with placebo. Around 86% lost at least 5% of their body weight, while 69% lost 10% or more.

STEP 5 — Weight Loss Maintained for 2 Years

The STEP 5 trial looked at longer-term results over 104 weeks. Participants receiving semaglutide lost an average of 15.2% of their starting weight versus 2.6% with placebo, with average weight loss remaining relatively stable between years one and two. Waist circumference also fell by 14.4cm on average.

I am on my 8th injection of semaglutide so 2 months. I am down 31 lbs and have had ZERO side effects. This med is a game changer if you want to take control of your weight loss. You aren’t starving yourself, you are just not eating as much as you did. This is more than likely how we are supposed to eat in the 1st place. Eat slow and stop when full. Don’t over eat. I still drink beer but I drink low carb beer. I make sure I stay in ketosis most of the time. I follow the carnivore diet along with the injections. Works wonderfully!

  3. Andrew Matthews

I used to drink two or three beers every evening to unwind after work. I took my very first semaglutide shot on Thursday and when I cracked open a cold beer on Friday night, I took two sips and felt totally indifferent to it. The way these peptides quiet down brain cravings outside of just food is amazing.

FAQ

Semaglutide FAQ

Quick answers to the most common questions about Semaglutide.

What is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 peptide primarily used for weight management and appetite control. It mimics a hormone the body naturally releases after eating, helping you feel fuller and less hungry so maintaining a lower calorie intake can become easier.

How does Semaglutide help with weight loss?

Its main effect is changing appetite and eating behaviour. Human trials show Semaglutide reduces hunger, increases fullness and can reduce food cravings, resulting in people naturally consuming fewer calories. Large clinical trials have shown this can translate into substantial weight loss over time.

How much weight loss has been seen in clinical trials?

Results vary between individuals, but the large STEP 1 trial found adults receiving Semaglutide alongside lifestyle intervention lost an average of 14.9% of their starting body weight over 68 weeks, compared with 2.4% with placebo. More than half of participants receiving Semaglutide lost at least 15% of their starting weight.

Does Semaglutide reduce hunger and food cravings?

Yes. Controlled human research has found reduced hunger, increased fullness, fewer food cravings and better control over eating. A 2026 randomised trial also found participants taking Semaglutide continued to consume fewer calories than those receiving placebo at 20, 40 and 60 weeks.

What is the difference between Semaglutide and Tirzepatide?

Both reduce appetite and are used for weight management, but Tirzepatide works through two hormone pathways while Semaglutide targets GLP-1 alone. In a direct 72-week clinical trial, Tirzepatide produced greater average weight loss than Semaglutide. Semaglutide remains a well-established option with extensive human research behind its effects on appetite and weight loss.

What side effects are most commonly reported with Semaglutide?

The most commonly reported side effects in clinical trials are gastrointestinal, particularly nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation. These effects are often reported while treatment is being increased and vary considerably between individuals.
